While the Steelers continue their 2014 free agency shopping spree, they’re also ramping up their activities in advance of the 2014 NFL Draft.
The Steelers of course scout year round, and Mike Tomlin and/or Kevin Colbert have been spotted at a number of pro days around the country. However, beginning April 1st, the Steelers can began to host collegiate prospects at their South Side facility.
Thus far two confirmed visits have been made:
- Donte Moncief, wide out Ole Miss
- Lanche Seastruck, RB Baylor
Dale Lolley listed the duo of two of his favorites predicting that the speedy receiver from Mississippi was a second round talent who could go in the first round. He pegged Seastruck as more of a “fourth round guy” which is exactly where the Steelers will look to build depth at running back.
It’s also been publicly confirmed that Texas State Christian cornerback Jason Verrett and Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier will visit with the Steelers.
Jason Verrett, according to Neal Coolong of Behind the Steel Curtain, “is said to be the best pure cover cornerback available in this draft,” but he is not as highly touted as Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert or Michigan State’s Darqueze Dennard because he’s smaller than the duo, both of whose names have been linked to the Steelers.
Ryan Shazier blew the socks off scouts with his unofficial 4.36 40 yard dash Pro Day time and is said to couple good instincts with explosiveness. He could go in the first round.
As Steelers Pre Draft Visits to Continue, Will the News?
The Steelers Pre-Draft visits will continue but that doesn’t mean news of these visits will. While the first visits were announced by Steelers Digest Editor Bob Labriola, the Steelers have not always made this information public.
Last year in fact they abruptly stopped published the list of visitors, forcing the faithful to scour Twitter for news from agents and the like. Either way, Steel Curtain Rising will do its best to keep you up to date on the Pittsburgh Steelers activities in advance of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Thanks for the updates, KT. I never heard of Verrett before, now he’s another name to follow in the next five weeks.
I have not heard of him either, but we need help at corner.
