Fortifying the Interior: Steelers Sign Brock Hoffman, Re-Sign Ryan McCollum

The Pittsburgh Steelers started free agency with a bang, remained quiet for several days, and then re-entered the market to strengthen their interior offensive line. First they re-signed back-up center Ryan McCollum, and then signed free agent center/guard Brock Hoffman from the Dallas Cowboys.

  • In doing so, Omar Khan is taking steps to shore up depth at both center and guard.

Ryan McCollum arrived in Pittsburgh in the 2022 season after playing with the Lions in 2021. McCollum spent the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons on the Steelers practice squad before making the final roster in 2024.

In 2024 and started 2 games for injured Zach Frazier and appeared in all 17 games in 2025 but did not start another game in 2025. McCollum had been a restricted free agent, but Omar Kahn opted not to make him a qualifying tender.

McCollum would have been free to sign with any NFL team, but has decided to remain in Pittsburgh.

Similarly, Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer could have kept Hoffman in Dallas as he was also a restricted free agent. However, the duo opted not to tender their “dual threat” interior offensive lineman, making him free to sign with any NFL team.

News that the Steelers might be signing off Hoffman began as soon as Dallas made him a free agent. Yet the days passed and no signing without the announcement of a signing.

Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly announced the signing last week, but no official report confirmed it. Indeed, the Steelers still haven’t announced the Hoffman signing, however his agent posted a picture of him signing his contract.

Brock Hoffman brings 16 games of starting experience to the Pittsburgh Steelers, having made starts at center as well as both right and left guard.

Hoffman’s signing is similar to one the Steelers made when they brought Nate Herbig to Pittsburgh in 2023, who 17 starts to his name, and was thought of as someone who could play either center or guard, although Nate Herbig had limited experience at center.

With Isaac Seumalo’s departure in free agency, guard was arguably the Steelers weakest position, with Spencer Anderson becoming the nominal starter with scant little behind him. Neither Hoffman nor McCollum looks to push for a starting role, but both provide valuable depth.

Steelers Start Free Agency Strong, Trade for Michael Pittman Jr., Sign Jamel Dean

Omar Khan started the Steelers off boldly on the first day of free agency, as he agreed to terms with the Indianapolis Colts to bring wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh and reportedly has an agreement to sign free agent cornerback Jamel Dean from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Steelers have started free agency with a splash before – signing Ladarius Green in 2016 and trading for D.K. Metcalf last spring, but starting free agency with twin moves like these is out of character for this franchise.

  • Yet, the Steelers aren’t straying as far out of their comfort zone as might seem.

Their biggest roster needs are at wide receiver and cornerback. And it has been common practice in Pittsburgh to use free agency to address those to give themselves a freer hand in the draft.

In Michael Pittman the Steelers gain a 6-year starter with just under 500 catches to his name. He’s will also give Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph or Will Howard a big target to throw at, standing at 6’4” and weighing 223 pounds.

Last season teams could and did double-cover D.K. Metcalf with impunity. Now the Steelers have taken that away. Pittman is also known as a strong locker-room leader.

For the record, Pittman has also played well against the Steelers logging 100-yard games in the Colts win over the Steelers in 2024 and catching 9 balls for 115 yards in the Steelers win over Indianapolis in 2025.

As part of the deal, Pittman agreed to a 3-year contract with the Steelers for 59 million dollars, although word has not leaked about how much is guaranteed.

The cost of bringing Pittman to Pittsburgh was low. The Steelers reportedly sent one of their 6th round picks from the 2026 NFL Draft and got one of the Colts 7ths from the same draft.

In Jamel Dean the Steelers bring a 7-year veteran to Pittsburgh who has made 77 starts. Dean is credited with allowing the fewest yard-per target in 2025 and was considered one of the top free agent corners available.

Reports indicate that Jamel Dean and the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a three-year, $36.75 million contract including $12 million in guarantees.

If Pittman’s arrival fills a glaring need at wide receiver, Dean’s addition at cornerback has the potential to be transformational for the Steelers secondary. Joey Porter Jr. is there yet, but he is showing he has the potential to be a shutdown corner. They now have Dean to play alongside him, and Brandin Echols and Asante Samuel as slot and/or backup options.

That gives new Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to keep Jalen Ramsey at safety, or otherwise move him around as a chess piece throughout the Steelers secondary.

Staying Put: Steelers to Re-Sign Cole Holcomb and Asante Samuel Jr.

The legal tampering period for NFL free agency has begun and two Steelers free agents will be staying in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers agreed to terms with inside linebacker Cole Holcomb in what is being reported as a 2-year 5 million dollar contract. They also will ink a cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to a one-year deal valued at 4 million dollars.

Cole Holcomb had been one of the Steelers marquee free agent signings in the 2023 off season, signaling hope that the franchise’s quest to find stability at this critical position might finally be coming to fruition.

Holcomb earned a starting role and was beginning to prove himself as a difference maker, when he suffered a brutal, season-ending injury in the Steelers win over the Tennessee Titans.

Holcomb missed the entire 2024 season rehabbing his injury, but returned to play in 2025 where he appeared in 14 games, made 3 starts and forced a fumble in the Steelers week 3 win over the New England Patriots.

The San Die… er um, Los Angeles Chargers made Asante Samuel Jr. a 2nd round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He began starting as a rookie and held the starting role for 3 seasons, until injuries ended his 2024 campaign after just four games.

Following that Asante Samuel had spinal fusion surgery which was performed by Dr. David Okonkwo and required a long recovery.

The Steelers were one of the few teams to show interest once he was cleared to play. He joined the practice squad in November and first activated him for the Bills game.

His first start came at Acrisure Stadium against the Miami Dolphins. Samuel intercepted a Tua Tagovailoa pass in the 1st quarter just after the Dolphins had crossed into Pittsburgh territory and the play set the tone for a dominating 28-15 win by the Steelers.

Impact of Holcomb and Samuel’s Return to Steelers

Cole Holcomb was the Steelers only unrestricted free agent at inside linebacker, and his signing shores up depth at this critical position. And assuming that the speculation that Malik Harrison could be a salary cap casualty is unfounded, Holcomb gives the Steelers a ready-to-go option behind Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson.

  • Samuel’s return carries a different impact.

Going into free agency, Joey Porter Jr. is the only Steelers full-time starting cornerback under contract. Samuel gives them depth at this critical position, and along with the signing of Jamel Dean, it also gives Patrick Graham a free hand in deploying Jalen Ramsey where he can be most effective.

Steelers Free Agency: Should Pittsburgh Re-Sign Connor Heyward?

“Bloodlines are important to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.”

We heard it when they drafted Terrell Edmunds. A year later we heard it again when Kevin Colbert traded up to get Devin Bush Jr.. The words were ringing in our ears when they signed Derek Watt in free agency yet another year later.

By the time they drafted Connor Heyward in 2022, the phrase had almost become passé.

Yet neither Terrell Edmunds, nor Devin Bush, nor Derek Watt stuck around long-term in Pittsburgh. As Connor Heyward reaches free agency, will he be the exception?

Connor Heyward, Connor Heyward 1st touchdown, Steelers vs Falcons

Capsule Profile of Connor Heyward’s Career with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Kevin Colbert drafted Connor Heyward in the 6th round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Heyward was a roster-bubble baby to begin with, but made the team officially as a reserve tight end, with the understanding that his role would be as a hybrid tight end/full back.

After seeing spot duty early in the season, Connor Heyward made his first highlight-worthy play when he caught a field-flipping 45 yard pass from Mitch Trubisky at set up Chase Claypool’s touchdown in the Steelers upset of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Six weeks later he scored his first touchdown, on a 17-yard strike from Kenny Pickett, giving the Steelers their only touchdown in a 19-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

In 2023 Heyward’s role grew in the offense, as his nearly doubled his catch and target total from the previous year. He only made 45 catches over his first two years, but 14 of those converted first downs and Heyward appeared to be building a niche for himself in the Steelers’ offense….

….And then Arthur Smith arrived.

At first glance Smith’s hire seemed like it might be a boon for Connor Heyward, as his offense feature tight ends. Indeed, they do. So much that Smith had a hand in bringing MyCole Pruitt and Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh.

  • And both players got playing time at Connor Heyward’s expense.

Heyward got 12 targets and 9 catches in 2024 and 2025, combined – or fewer than his rookie season. During 2024 Connor Heyward did earn role as the ball carrier on the Steel City Shove.

Connor Heyward scores a touchdown during the 2025 Steelers win over the Ravens at Acrisure.

He rushed the ball 15 times for 45 yards, 11 first downs and 2 touchdowns, including the Steelers first in Mike Tomlin’s final career win.

The Case for the Steelers Re-Signing Connor Heyward

Connor Heyward has delivered excellent value as a 6th round pick. He’s proven to be versatile, both as a blocker, receiver and rusher. Connor Heyward is never going to be the kind of player that opposing defensive coordinators lose sleep game planning against, nor is he ever going to give defenders 2nd thoughts about tackling him the way Darnell Washington will.

But in four years, Connor Heyward has shown he is the kind of player who you delivers when you call his number.

He’s the kind of player who makes plays that help win football games that don’t always show up in the stat sheet.

The Case Against the Steelers Re-Signing Connor Heyward

In four years has Connor Heyward done anything that an undrafted rookie free agent couldn’t do? Sure, Arthur Smith favored his former players at Heyward’s expense, but contrast Connor Heyward’s contributions with Derek Watt’s, a niche player who did deliver a difference.

Derek Watt, Steelers vs Eagles

The Steelers were 7-1 when Derek Watt got a carry. Can anyone look at the last two years and argue:

You know, what the missing link for Steelers offense has been? They never let Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers let it rip to Connor Heyward.

Yeah, right.

Having Connor Heyward as Cam Heyward’s little brother in Pittsburgh has given the franchise a feel good story. But he’s had four years to prove he can be a difference maker and four years later, the Steelers offense is still struggling.

It is unduly harsh to charge Connor Heyward with being part of the problem, but he’s done scant little to suggest he’s earned the right to be part of the solution.

The Curtain’s Call on Connor Heyward and Steelers

Connor Heyward is the type of player you want to have on your team. He’s always going to be one of the guys on the roster bubble, but one of the tricks to making a championship run is to get roster bubble guys who give you a little something extra.

The Steelers have two solid tight ends in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. Connor Heyward gives them a versatile 3rd option who can line up in the backfield in a pinch. Mike McCarthy once went into a regular season carrying 5 tight ends on his roster.

Will the Steelers Re-Sign MVP Kenneth Gainwell in Free Agency?

In 2025 the Steelers “took a flyer” on free agent running back Kenneth Gainwell giving him a one-year, veteran minimum contract. Gainwell took that opportunity and ran with it well enough to win the Steelers 2025 MVP award.

So if a guy reaches free agency and has just won the MVP award, re-signing him is a no-brainer, Right?

That hasn’t always been so in Pittsburgh, so Steelers Kenneth Gainwell free agency decision promises to be an interesting one.

Kenneth Gainwell, Darnell Washington, Steelers vs Bears

Capsule Profile of Kenneth Gainwell’s Career with the Steelers

In December 2024 the Steelers traveled to Philadelphia and got their teeth kicked in by the eventual Super Bowl Champion. While all eyes were on the Eagles starting running back Saquon Barkley, Mike Tomlin’s were on Kenneth Gainwell.

Gainwell only managed about 20 yards on the ground and another 40 through the air, but that was enough for him to do his damage to the Steeelers defense.

Enough for Mike Tomlin to bring him to Pittsburgh to play alongside Jaylen Warren. The Steelers gave Warren a 2-year contract extension last summer, signaling he might finally become the “feature back” after watching three years of “Sludge Ball” behind Najee Harris.

  • What followed next presents an interesting study in the contrast between perception and reality.

As the Steelers offense struggled to find its footing, fans complained, with increasing intensity, about Kenneth Gainwell gaining snaps at Warren’s expense.

  • Alas the numbers tell a different story.
  • Gainwell averaged 6.7 carries per game to Warren’s 13.

Had the Steelers won consistently, no one would have complained, validating Chuck Noll’s, assertion that questions like “Why don’t you throw to the tight end?” translate to “Why don’t you win?”

Kenneth Gainwell acted as a jack of all trades in Arthur Smith’s 2025 Steelers offense, playing as sort of a modern-day Rodney Carter, a name Generation X Steelers fans might recall.

Need to fake the Tush Push on 4th and 1? Feign like you’re giving it to Connor Heyward and toss it to Gainwell instead who’ll run it for 55 yards.

Players generally win MVP wards because they dominate so thoroughly, their performance is indispensable to the team’s success. Think back to Franco Harris’, Jerome Bettis’ or Le’Veon Bell’s MVP seasons for clear examples.

  • Kenneth Gainwell authored a different kind of MVP campaign.

He made slow, steady contributions to the offense that grew as the season progressed.

His efforts, 537 yards rushing and 486 yards receiving with 8 total touchdowns, aren’t best measured in quantity, but rather quality.

Gainwell was the most consistent player on a struggling offense. He delivered when coaches called his number, and those little contributions more often than not had a big part defining the difference between wins and losses.

The Case for the Steelers Re-Signing Kenneth Gainwell

There are a lot of reasons why the Steelers Killer Bees era disappointed, but one that many miss is that piss-poor backfield depth sabotaged Mike Tomlin’s teams in the playoffs for 3 straight years.

Kenneth Gainwell brought the Steelers something they’ve struggled to find: A true number 2 running back who complements the starter, steps in when needed, and makes a difference when he has the ball in his hands.

Spencer Anderson, Kenneth Gainwell, Pat Freiermuth, Steelers vs Vikings, Steelers vs Vikings Dublin, Ireland

His best play of the season illustrates this. He ran 55 yards on the fake tush push in Chicago, but didn’t score. Jaylen Warren did one play later, highlighting the 1-2 punch the tandem brings Pittsburgh.

Mike McCarthy’s offense will differ in important ways, but the value a true RB No. 2 provides remains indespensable.

Other NFL teams certainly took note of Gainwell’s MVP season and he won’t be an under the radar signing. But he’s also not the type of back that anyone thinks will or should “reset the market.”

He’s someone the Steelers can and should resign.

The Case Against the Steelers Re-Signing Kenneth Gainwell

Yes, Kenneth Gainwell was the best and most consistent player on the Steelers offense. And that says a lot more about how bad that offense was than it does about how good Gainwell is.

Gainwell is a “nice to have” and was a great pickup on a veteran minimum contract, but are you really going to give a legit 2nd contract, one with real guaranteed money, to a backup running back who didn’t even crack 900 all-purpose yards?

Please.

Aaron Rodgers was right when he said that the Steelers offense sort of resembled the Island of Misfit toys. Gainwell was one of those. Yes, he’s a legit role player in a productive, varsity NFL offense – but the Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t fielded one of those since what? 2018?

Sure the Steelers have salary cap space to spare, but they doesn’t mean they should waste it on a guy like Gainwell when they’ve got Kaleb Johnson waiting in the wings.

Curtain’s Call on the Steelers and Kenneth Gainwell

Just because Kenneth Gainwell was the MVP last year doesn’t mean the Steelers will bend over backwards to bring him back.

  • There’s precedent in Pittsburgh for doing the exact opposite.

Quarterback Neil O’Donnell MVP honors during the Steelers 1995 season. When O’Donnell became a free agent after Super Bowl XXX, Pittsburgh made him an offer, but he declined to get into a bidding war with the New York Jets. Seven years later, Kordell Stewart won the team MVP award in 2001, yet found himself benched permanently in favor of Tommy Maddox in 2002.

At the NFL Scouting Combine Omar Khan confirmed that the Steelers have started negotiations with Gainwell, but if they haven’t signed him by this point, they won’t before free agency starts.

The Steelers will make him an offer they think is fair, allow him to gauge interest from the rest of the NFL, and won’t go beyond their original number. The Steelers value Gainwell’s services. We’ll soon find out if the rest of the NFL values them more.

3rd Time’s the Charm? Should the Steelers Re-Sign James Pierre for 2026?

“The third time’s the charm,” goes the saying. As cornerback James Pierre and the Pittsburgh Steelers approach free agency both sides will get their chance to either prove or disprove this old addage.

Let’s take a look how the dynamics behind this decision will play out.

James Pierre, Cortland Sutton, Steelers vs Broncos

Capsule Profile of James Pierre’s Career with the Steelers

“…What a long strange trip it’s been.” I have no idea of James Pierre is a Grateful Dead fan, but an has his career embodied Jerry Garcia’s’ famous lyrics.

Just take a look at how 2025 unfolded for James Pierre. He got cut at the end of the summer, started the regular season on the practice squad and by the time it ended the Steelers had cut Super Bowl starter Darius Slay and promoted Pierre in his place.

  • Its been that way since the beginning for James Pierre.

He got his start during the COVID summer of 2020, as Jim Wexell tagged him as a sleeper to make the final roster. Wexell was right. Pierre made the roster and appeared in special teams in 16 games.

In 2021 Pierre started 4 games at cornerback, making an interception to help beat the Broncos. Yet, he struggled at other times and finished the season on the bench. He did make 2 starts in 2022  including the stepping up as one of several injury replacements in the upset of Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but only started on other game in ’22.

  • By 2023 his defensive snap count dropped to just 2%, although he continued to excel on special teams.

The Steelers opted let him walk when he reached free agency in 2024, and Pierre signed with the Washington Commanders. In a move Pierre made them regret, Washington cut him before the season’s start, and Steelers quickly added him to their practice squad and promoted him to active roster after a few weeks.

James Pierre, Noah Brown, Steelers vs Commanders

James Pierre deflects a 3rd down pass. Photo Credit: AP, Chaz Palla, Steelers vs Commanders

Pierre played extensively on special teams and participated in 21% of the Steelers defensive snaps in 2024. Pierre’s role grew in 2025 – after he made the active roster – in a season that saw him deflect 22 passes and his 2nd quarter interception of Lamar Jackson against the Ravens set up Kenneth Gainwell’s touchdown, allowing the Steelers to go up 17-3 in a game they won 27-22.

A multi-year contract is the dream of every NFL player, and this is the third time James Pierre has reached unrestricted free agency the Steelers.* Once the Steelers offered him nothing. Last year he got a one-year deal, will James Pierre cash in with the Steelers on his third time around?

*Pierre was a restricted free agent in 2023 and did not get a tender, but a smaller, one-year contract.

The Case for the Steelers Re-Signing James Pierre

The Steelers secondary is a mess – Joey Porter Jr. will hopefully sign a deal to become Pittsburgh’s long-term starter at cornerback, Jalen Ramsey will presumably return as will Brandin Echols, but the Steelers don’t have much depth beyond that (Cory Trice has talent, but can’t stay healthy.)

At age 29, James Pierre has entered the period of his career where experience and athletic talent meet to optimize performance.

James Pierre, Derius Davis, Steelers vs Chargers

Body Slam! Photo Credit: NFL.com

No, no one will ever mention “James Pierre” alongside the likes of Hall of Fame corners Jack Butler, Mel Blount, Rod Woodson or even Ike Taylor. But James Pierre can be a William Gay like player, and Gay provided stability during a tumultuous time for the Steelers secondary.

Signing James Pierre can accomplish the same goal for the Steelers, while giving Pittsburgh the cushion it needs need to avoid another Artie Burns situation – having to reach for a cornerback in the draft.

The Case Against the Steelers Resigning James Pierre

James Pierre certainly has a nice story, but there’s a reason why the Steelers were able to let him walk and bring him back twice. He is a solid special teams player and can work in at cornerback, but is he really a long-term starter for the Steelers?

The Steelers need to find a true, legit number 2 NFL cornerback to play opposite Porter, particularly if Jalen Ramsey needs to play safety next year.

James Pierre simply isn’t that man.

The Curtain’s Call on the Steelers and James Pierre

Had Mike Tomlin not decided to put up the Go’in Fishing sign, James Pierre’s return to Pittsburgh would be slam dunk. However, he’s new to Mike McCarthy and Patrick Graham.

By all accounts, the Steelers are interested in bringing Pierre back, but no one should expect Omar Khan to offer a blank check. Expect Khan to make him an offer, but he won’t get into any bidding wars to keep James Pierre in Pittsburgh.

Should the Steelers Ask Isaac Seumalo to Stick Around in Pittsburgh?

“Who is Isaac Seumalo?” would be the correct Jeopardy question to this answer “He was the first major Steelers free agent acquisition made by Omar Khan and Andy Weidl in the duo’s first off season as General Manager and Assistant General Manager in Pittsburgh.”

The Steelers signing Seumalo by Khan and Weidl was anything but trivial. Offensive line had been a glaring weakness of the Steelers for several seasons. Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin had achieved some improvement following the line’s nadir in 2021, but most of that improvement had come from applying Band Aids.

Signing Seumalo was to be a definitive step towards rebuilding the Steelers offensive line from the foundation up. Three years later everyone agrees that bringing Seumalo to Pittsburgh was a success.

Now that Isaac Seumalo is set to become a free agent again, the question is should the Steelers keep Seumalo in Pittsburgh?

Isaac Seumalo, Steelers vs Rams

Isaac Seumalo reflecting before the game. Photo Credit: Karl Roser, Steelers.com

Capsule Profile of Isaac Seumalo’s Career with the Steelers

Isaac Seumalo arrived in Pittsburgh and immediately took over the left guard position that had lacked stability for several seasons. His presence also allowed the Steelers to trade Kevin Dotson, a good player who nonetheless ran afoul of the coaching staff (quick nod to my friend Matt C. Steel at Steel City Insider who always argued that the Steelers erred in playing Dotson on the left side.)

During his first season Seumalo started all 17 games for the Steelers. During the Steelers 2024 season injuries limited him to 13 starts and in 2025 that number increased to 14.

The Case for the Steelers Re-Signing Isaac Seumalo

The Steelers offensive line got a slow start in 2024. You know when things started to turn up? When Seumalo returned to the line up in week six vs the Raiders.

The Steelers offensive line is a much stronger unit in today than it was before Seumalo arrived, and he has been the line’s most consistent player since then.

Let’s also consider this: Broderick Jones‘ neck injury is far more serious than the Steelers let on during the season. Omar Khan wouldn’t even confirm that he would be ready for training camp.

  • Does Mike McCarthy really want to begin his tenure by rebuilding the left side of his line?

No, of course he doesn’t. So the wise move is to keep Sumalo in Pittsburgh for another couple of three years.

The Case Against the Steelers Re-Signing Issac Seumalo

Sure, it is easy to say that the offensive line’s worst game this past season was against the Chargers, point to the fact that Seumalo was out of the game and say, “See what’s happened when he’s been out.”

  • That would be easy, but it would be both misleading and wrong.

IN which game did the Steelers rush the ball the best last season? Against Detroit. And Seumalo missed that game. He did suit up for the playoffs and Aaron Rodgers was in duress all night.

IF the Steelers are going to bring Rodgers back, they need better pass protection. Can Seumalo provide that?

Seumalo has been the Steelers best offensive lineman over the last 3 years. He’s provided maturity and leadership to the line. But he’s a transitional player rather than a foundational one. He’s also turning 33 and injuries are starting to mount. Seumalo probably has more football left in him, but its probably best that he play that somewhere else than Pittsburgh.

The Curtain’s Call on Issac Seumalo and the Steelers

This one is a hard one to call. If Broderick Jones had remained healthy and continued playing at the level he’d reached it is safe to say the Steelers would move on. But Jones is out, and while Dylan Cook played well in his absence, I doubt the new coaching staff is going to be willing to just hand him the left tackle job.

  • Which means there’s the case for stability that Seumalo would provide.

At the end of the day, this will likely come down to how much the Steelers will be willing to guarantee on say a 2-year deal. Because if the Steelers were going to lock Seumalo up for any longer, they’d have already have done so.

Expect Seumalo to test the market, and we’ll see what happens next.

Steelers Cut Jonnu Smith — Raising Questions About Arthur Smith’s Offensive Choices

The Pittsburgh Steelers cut tight end Jonnu Smith, making their first major personnel move ahead of free agency. The decision isn’t a surprise and upon closer inspection reveals more about ” the other Mr. Smith,” Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and his 2025 offense than it does about Jonnu.

Jonnu Smith Denzel Ward, Steelers vs Browns

But cutting Jonnu Smith does save them 7 million dollars against the salary cap and while the Steelers aren’t strapped for space, more is better than less.

Jonnu Smith arrived in Pittsburgh last June as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami in return for Smith and Jalen Ramsey.

And Smith came in on a hot streak. He’d logged 50 catches in 2023 for Atlanta, doubling his 2022 total. In 2025 he played for the Miami Dolphins where he hauled in 88 catches, including 8 touchdowns.

With no true number 2 wide receiver to pair with D.K. Metcalf, Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin hoped they could Jonnu Smith would fill the void. Alas he could not.

Pat Freiermuth, Jordan Battle, Steelers vs Bengals, Steelers vs Bengals TNF

Pat Freiermuth stiff arms Jordan Battle en route to the end zone. Photo Credit: Chaz Palla, Tribune-Review

Perhaps most tellingly, the loss to the Bengals was the only game an Arthur Smith led tight-end-centric Steelers offense seemed to be viable concept, Jonnu Smith had 3 catches for 28 yards and was clearly outplayed by Pat Freiermuth who had 111 yards and 2 touchdowns.

  • One would figure that Arthur Smith would feature Pat Freiermuth more after that.

Alas, he did not.

By a hair, Jonnu Smith actually had a higher snap count that Freiermuth, despite the fact that Freiermuth more touchdowns, a better catch rate and higher success rate that Smith.

And that brings into focus the biggest quibble about former Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s brief tenure in Pittsburgh: He tended to favor his former players.

Jonnu Smith played for Arthur Smith both in Tennessee and at Atlanta. A year ago, MyCole Pruitt got playing time at the expense of Connor Heyward, despite the fact that Heyward out performed Pruitt – although the sample size is much smaller than the one for the Smith-Freiermuth comparison.

This is how Alan Saunders at SteelersNow described the dynamic after criticizing Omar Khan for acquiring Jonnu:

To be clear, it’s not necessarily his fault that Arthur Smith played favorites with Jonnu Smith to the point that he sabotaged his own unit’s success.

Saunders may be being a little harsh – the Steelers could have and should have found ways to get the ball into Freiermuth’s hands more frequently, but there were a lot of other things ailing the offense.

But in 2024 it seemed like Smith’s favoritism of Pruitt over Heyward suggested he had a blind spot when it came to favoring his former players, and his reliance on Smith at the expense of Freiermuth confirmed that suspicion in 2025.

Anderson Leaves Pittsburgh with Class

The Steelers also cut vetern offensive tackle Calvin Anderson ahead of free agency, saving themselves another 2 million dollars in salary cap space.

Anderson took the high road out of Pittsburgh

The NFL is a business. Players know that. But getting a visit from the Turk is never easy, especially when it may be your last stop.

But Anderson is handling it with class. We wish him well at his next stop or, if fate be it, in his “Life’s Work.”

The Pros and Cons of the Steelers Re-signing Aaron Rodgers in 2026

Aaron Rodgers has yet to decide if he wants to play in 2026, but if are Mike McCarthy, Omar Khan and Art Rooney II right to welcome him back?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have no long-term answer at quarterback and haven’t since Ben Roethlisberger threw out his arm in 2019.

  • That’s not for lack of trying.

They’ve attempted quarterback-reclamation projects, signing not one but three former first-round picks. Two flamed out and Dwayne Haskins, God rest his soul, passed way. They’ve tried investing a first-round pick and, if nothing else, proved Pittsburgh can embrace the “fail fast principle” when warranted.

They’ve also tried what Jim Wexell termed as the Bobby Layne approach, signing an aging franchise QB. Twice. Results have been a bit better, but neither veteran has improved the Steelers post-season prospects.

With that backstory in mind, we look at the Pros and Cons of resigning Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Steelers vs Dolphins, Steelers vs Dolphins MNF

Capsule Profile of Aaron Rodgers’ Career with the Steelers

IF Pittsburgh Magazine did a “Person of the Year” award for the city of Pittsburgh then Aaron Rodgers would have won hands down. He dominated Steelers storylines for months – even before he made his covert stop at the South Side in April.

When he signed in June, the narrative on the off season shifted from “the franchise is in intentional tank” mode to “We’re All In!”

Neither proved to be true, but Rodgers did mesh well with the team, and proceeded to start 16 of 17 games for the Steelers in the regular season. His record was 10-6, he threw498 passes for 327 completions on 498 attempts, for 3322 yards with 24 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

He was 0-1 in the playoffs, where he barely completed 50% of his passes and had 2 defensive scores.

The Case for the Steelers Resigning Aaron Rodgers in 2026

The case for the Steelers resigning Aaron Rodgers in 2026 proceeds from the speicifc to the general.

Since Ben Roethlisberger retired, Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, Justin Fields, Kyle Allen (you forgot about him, didn’t you?), Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers have all thrown passes for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Everyone but Allen has started multiple games for the franchise.

Aaron Rodgers gave the Steelers their best quarterbacking they’ve enjoyed since Roethlisberger retired. And its not even close.

Yes, you can quibble as Joe Starkey did that Russell Wilson had a better passer rating by a hair. Yeah, and Walter Abercrombie had a better career rushing average then Jerome Bettis….

Seriously, the reason why the Steelers closed the season strong in 2025 while sputtering in 2024 was because Aaron Rodgers elevated his play and the team in ways that Wilson tried and failed to do.

Beyond that, there is also the inconvenient truth that, the Steelers long term answer at quarterback probably isn’t out there to be found in the 2026 off season. Even if he is out there in the draft or already on the roster in the form of Will Howard, Rodgers would serve as a mentor.

Then, there’s the question of cost. Assuming Rodgers is open to playing at the salary level he played at in 2025, the Steelers will never get that level of play at quarterback for that salary cap from another NFL veteran.

  • Finally, there’s the question of Aaron Rodgers and his relationship with Mike McCarthy.

The last time the Steelers had a new head coach, Twitter did not even exist and Facebook’s biggest competitor was probably “MySpace.” Mike Tomlin’s thumbprint is deeply engrained on the fabric of the franchise.

Mike McCarthy is going to do things differently. And even if those changes will be for the better, they’re bound to create tension. Having Aaron Rodgers in the locker room can ensure that that tension is directed constructively.

The Case Against the Steelers Resigning Aaron Rodgers in 2026

Going from general to specific, the case against the Steelers resigning Aaron Rodgers in 2026 starts with the fact that the team continues to kick the quarterback can down the road.

The Steelers have had at least three chances for a “clean” reset since Ben Roethlisberger’s injury in 2019, and each time they’ve focused on the here and now. How many more band aids can the franchise apply?

And while Aaron Rodgers may have been a “good” quarterback and played “well” at times in 2025 there’s a harsh reality hiding behind some of those numbers: Rodgers struggled against defenses with elite pass rushes. Worse than struggling, he looked skittish, kinda like a 42 year old man who was rapidly tiring of getting hit by 250 to 300 pound 20 somethings.

Sure, the offensive line can mature and build on the improvements it showed during the course of 2025. But overall that’s not a tendency that will improve.

The Curtain’s Call on the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers in 2026

The ball is in Aaron Rodgers’ court. Art Rooney, Omar Khan and Mike McCarthy all say that Aaron Rodgers wants back.

  • When he was in New York, Rodgers said he’d be open to playing for McCarthy again.

By all accounts Rodgers liked the team and the city. Assuming Rodgers is willing to play for the same type of salary he played at in 2026 there’s every reason why the Steelers should and will welcome him back.

Regardless, Rodgers has to make a choice and he must do it before free agency. Neal Coolong has suggested that Rodgers may wait to see if Minnesota is interested – that’s his prerogative, but the Steelers cannot wait.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2026 Free Agency Tracker

NFL free agency is almost upon us, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been quiet thus far.

Sure, Mike McCarthy and Omar Khan seem set on dropping Will Howard’s name whenever the opportunity arises, and trampling down any Pat Freiermuth trade rumors, but the Steelers have not made any roster moves aside from signing players to “futures” contracts.
