Steelers Offense Comes to Life in 30-27 Win Over Bengals at Acrisure

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 30-27 at Acrisure Stadium in Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season, improving their record to 2-1 and keeping them even in the deadlocked AFC North.

  • Like any good AFC North rivalry game this one came down to the final gun.

When it was all said and done the Pittsburgh Steelers prevailed because a bold personnel decision made by Mike McCarthy had an end-to-end ripple effect across an offense that finally looked NFL-worthy.

Four Plays Signal a Dramatically Different Steelers Offense

One constant through the Steelers win over the Falcons and their loss to the Patriots has been a substandard offense. This continued a trend from previous seasons that Mike McCarthy’s hire was supposed to change that. Yet he hadn’t.

Worse yet, the Bengals defense, highlighted by the arrival of Dexter Lawrence, was looking scary good. The recipe seemed to spell disaster for the Steelers.

But it only took Mike McCarthy and his players 4 plays to prove that this offense was capable of something both different and better.

The first play from scrimmage saw Jaylen Warren line up behind Aaron Rodgers, with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington linked up besides him in the backfield. It wasn’t exactly a Wishbone formation, but the smart money was that McCarthy was going to use his bruising blockers to challenge the Bengals up the middle.

He did not. Instead he called a pass play where Warren slipped into the flat, Pat Freiermuth pancaked a would-be tackler, and 30 yards and a blink of an eye later, Warren was in Bengals territory.

A five-yard dink-and-dunk pass to Roman Wilson and an incompletion brought up a third and five. And here is when things really changed.

  • How many times have we seen Steelers drives sputter in similar moments?

Raise your hand if you weren’t quietly hoping to avoid a sack and wondering whether Chris Boswell could make a 60-yarder. A lot of people should be raising their hands, but Mike McCarthy isn’t one of them.

Instead he was bunching four wideouts on the weakside, allowing Roman Wilson to gain a full 5 yards to hook up with Aaron Rodgers for a 38-yard touchdown.

No, Pittsburgh hadn’t proven it could go touchdown-for-touchdown with Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ high-octane offense, but the Steelers offense had at least made the suggestion….

12 Hands in the Pile for Pittsburgh’s Offense

You can attach a lot of superlatives to the Steelers offensive performance, even if no one will or should mistake it for the Greatest Show on Turf. But what really sticks out is that it was a end-to-end team performance with 12 different players touched the ball.

  • Roman Wilson showed he was more than dink-and-dunk/garbage time wideout
  • D.K. Metcalf didn’t dominate, but caught 3 of 5 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown
  • Germie Bernard only had one catch, but it converted a critical third down
  • Bernard also made a heads-up block enabling the longest catch of the game
  • Darnell Washington made that catch, as well as a critical third down conversion

These individual performances, while important, don’t capture the full story of the step forward the offense took against the Bengals. Mike McCarthy has professed his desire for a balanced run-pass ratio.

With Aaron Rodgers throwing 34 passes and Steelers running backs carrying the ball 19 times, that ratio was once again skewed. But that ratio also shows how too tight a focus on statistics and skew the understanding of the game, as the Steelers second touchdown illustrates.

Ben Skowronek comes in motion, moves up field as if he’s a blocker, Rodgers fakes the handoff to Warren, the safety bites an in another blink of an eye Skowronek is scoring a touchdown – by forcing Cincinnati to respect the run, Rodgers burned the Bengals through the air.

Run! Jaylen Run!

Ever since he arrived as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2022, both fans and professional commentators have been screaming for the Steelers to use Jaylen Warren as a featured running back.

  • For one reason or another, that role never emerged for Warren.

Until today.

And Warren proved he was more than up to the task. How good was Warren? Well, he logged a near-All Pro level game despite the fact that his best run, an 85-yarder, was called back due to a ticky-tacky penalty.

Jaylen Warren breaks one in the 2nd quarter of the Steelers week 3 2026 win over the Bengals.

Warren hurt the Bengals through the air and on the ground, rushing for 127 yards and catching 3 passes for 49 yards. His play wasn’t flawless – he stumbled on what could have been a game-clinching touchdown run – but Warren was easily the MVP.

Special Teams, Defense Deliver When It Counts

The Steelers special teams were en route to a meh afternoon — Kaden Wetjen wasn’t scaring anyone with his kick returns, and the Steelers return coverage was a little too leaky, spotting the Bengals a little too much yardage.

Yet, when Ke’Shawn Williams let a punt bounce off of him with 11:04 left in the 4th quarter Ben Skowronek streaked in to make the recovery.

  • Four plays later, Chris Boswell was kicking the tying field goal

Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins no doubt made a lot of Fantasy Football Owners happy after this game. It is easy to see why. Each man caught a touchdown, with Burrow throwing another to Mike Gesicki, and really for much of the afternoon they made it look easy.

But the defense delivered when it counted. Going into the locker room at halftime Mike McCarthy revealed that he needed his defense to get two stops of Burrow in the second half (who can imagine Mike Tomlin saying something like that?)

And that’s what he got. Midway through the 4th quarter with the Bengals at midfield on 3rd and 2, Cam Heyward wrapped Burrow forcing him to ground it, bringing up a punt.

  • That allowed the Steelers to score the go-ahead field goal.

Giving the ball to Burrow with 2 minutes left and 2 timeouts is a very dangerous proposition, but with the Bengals passing from Pittsburgh’s 38 the Derrick Harmon strip sacked Burrow, with Sebastian Joseph-Day recovering, allowing the Mike McCarthy to send out the victory formation.

I’ll gladly trade fancy passing stats to Fantasy Football fans in exchange for defensive linemen that can rattle elite quarterbacks in critical situations on any given Sunday.

Offensive Line Provides the Foundation – Now It Is Time to Build

It wasn’t quite a shootout, but the Pittsburgh Steelers did outscore the Cincinnati Bengals. This end-to-end offensive effort was anchored by two names you won’t see in the stat sheet, Max Iheanachor and Brock Hoffman. The right side of the offensive line had been shaky through the first two games.

  • Mike McCarthy not only took note, he took action by starting Iheanachor and Hoffman.

Switching out 2/5 of your offensive line in Week 3 is a risk, but McCarthy’s decision paid immediate dividends:

Great offensive lines are built over the course of seasons, not in single games. Nor was the unit perfect, as sacks forced twin 4th quarter possessions into field goal situations. But hopefully this performance is something that both the line itself and the entire offense can build on.

Hopefully they’re fast builders, because a trip to Cleveland and another AFC North Game is just three days away….

1. Take Mike McCarthy at His Word on 4 Quarterbacks

When Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar were the only 3 quarterbacks during OTA’s Mike McCarthy affirmed that “4 quarterbacks would be awesome.” He meant it. For the third time in 21 years, the Steelers are keeping 4 quarterbacks on their initial roster. In 1995 they did it from a position of strength, in 1999 they did it from a position of weakness.

This time it is somewhere in between, but given the dynamics of the room, McCarthy is making the right move by keeping 4 quarterbacks.

2. There’s No Numbers in Safety

The most concerning personnel move the Steelers made was to put DeShaun Elliott on the injured reserve list. Sebastian Castro got cut while Donte Kent is on the PUP list.

That leaves the Steelers with 3 safeties, one of whom is a 7th round pick and another 9-year veteran on his 6th team.

Mike McCarthy has talked about using Jalen Ramsey as a Charles Woodson like chess-piece. I suspect he’ll start 2026 the way he finished 2025 – working as a strong safety.

3. Steelers Lean into the “Fail Fast” Principle

The first major move that Omar Khan and McCarthy made was to deal 2023’s first round pick Broderick Jones off to Dallas, after just 3 seasons with the Steelers. The duo didn’t stop there, shipping off 2025’s 3rd round pick Kaleb Johnson to Green Bay for a 6th round pick.

During the spring McCarthy promised Johnson a clean slate moving in 2026. And he clearly got a long-look early in training camp.

But he fell out of favor with the coaches and will now follow his NFL dream with the Packers. Clearly neither Omar Khan nor Mike McCarthy are allowing sentimentally to cloud their decisions.

4. Youth Over Experience

The entire Steelers 2026 draft class has made the final roster. Some of these guys could be headed to IR if veterans are re-signed and this may not be a first, but it is a rare occurrence.

  • Much has been made about the age of the Steelers roster.

And while the average age of the Steelers roster is a bit skewed by the presence of Aaron Rodgers and Cam Heyward, Mike McCarthy and his staff clearly opted for youth over experience.

Veterans such as Dean Lowry, Elandon Roberts, Malik Harrison, Travis Homer and Esezi Otomewo all got visits from The Turk.

Some of these players could be back either in the next few days or after the opener, but McCarthy clearly isn’t beholden to something that a player has done for the team or done in the league in the past, but instead is focused on what he believes players can do in the future.

5. The Ball is in Porter’s Court

The Steelers also had to decide to activate Joey Porter Jr. from the PuP list or keep him there for the first 4 games of the season. The Steelers activated him.

  • In doing so, they put the ball in Porter’s court.

The Steelers would like to extend Porter’s contract, and Porter purportedly wants to stay in Pittsburgh. But the two sides can’t agree on a number.

  • Mike McCarthy, unlike Mike Tomlin, doesn’t seem to have much use for “hold ins.”

Word is the Steelers want Porter to participate in practice before engaging in serious contract negotiations. Now that he’s off the PuP list he has to decide whether he’ll do that or not.

To the Trenches: Steelers Draft Gennings Dunker, Iowa Guard, in 3rd Round of 2026 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Gennings Dunker, guard from Iowa, with their third and final third round pick of the 2026 NFL Draft. To get Gennings, Omar Khan had to trade the Steelers 6th round compensatory pick, moving up three spots.

Dunker was the last of the Pittsburgh’s premium picks, as the Steelers had 5 picks in the top 3 rounds and in taking him Khan and Mike McCarthy continued to stick to the Steelers 2026 Draft Needs Matrix, which rated guard as teams 6th most urgent need to fill.

Although Dunker played tackle at Iowa, Steelers Offensive Line coach James Campen confirms that he will start at guard for the Steelers.

Over the past three seasons, Gennings Dunker started 37 games as the Hawkeyes right tackle, before moving to guard at the Senior Bowl. As Campen explained, “They’re so well coached at Iowa. When they come out they have established pad level and footwork.”

Steel City Insider’s Roy Countryman ranked Dunker as 2nd on his 3rd round value board for offensive lineman.

Offensive lineman need to move people, and Gennings Dunker’s tape from Iowa proves he’s got that ability:

Gennings Dunker’s Arrival Sets Up 3-Way Battle at Left Guard

In his pre-draft press conference, Mike McCarthy praised his starting guards, expressing satisfaction with Spencer Anderson and Brock Hoffman, whom he knows from his time in Dallas.

Going into the 2026 NFL Draft, Anderson and Hoffman were expected to battle for the starting job at left guard as Mason McCormick, is entrenched as the starter at right guard.

As a third round pick Dunker will make the final roster, but he’s going to have to show that he’s worthy of earning a helmet on game day. But, by the same token the Steelers clearly aren’t convinced that either Anderson or Hoffman is the long-term answer at guard, because you expect third rounders to develop into starters.

  • Dunker will get the chance to prove he can do that this summer at St. Vincents.

Welcome to Steelers Nation Gennings Dunker.

Steelers 2026 NFL Draft Needs at Guard and Center: Stability Meets Uncertainty

Omar Khan and Andy Weidl’s first major personnel move with the Steelers was to sign Isaac Seumalo.

Isaac Seumalo was their first building block in their end-to-end makeover of the Steelers’ offensive line. The process began in 2023 and by 2025 it was complete, as Khan and Weidl has replaced the entire starting offensive line.

But the Steelers let Semalo walk in free agency, so does that mean that Khan and Weidl need to address guard in the 2026 NFL Draft?

The Steelers Center and Guard Depth Charts Entering the 2026 NFL Draft – The Starters

The Steelers interior offensive line is anchored by Zach Frazier, whom Khan and Weidl drafted in the 2nd round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Going into the draft there was speculation the Steelers might draft the West Virginia native first, and based on his play over two years we can see why.

Frazier still needs to improve to before we begin mentioning with names like “Mansfield,” “Webster,” “Dawson,” “Hartings“and “Pouncey“, but everything he has shown thus far indicates he can become that person.

Playing to the Fraizer’s right is Mason McCormick, whom Pittsburgh picked in the 4th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. McCormick got thrown into the starting line up earlier than expected due to injuries to Seumalo and then James Daniels, but has played well and the right side of the Steelers offensive line is shaping up to be a strength.

The Steelers Center and Guard Depth Chart Entering the 2026 NFL Draft – The Backups

Just how versatile is Spencer Anderson? Well, unlike any of the other players on the offensive line he has caught a pass from Aaron Rodgers. He can also play tackle and guard and that’s what makes the Steelers decision at guard, and also offensive tackle so interesting.

The Steelers drafted Spencer Anderson in the 7th round of the 2023 NFL Draft and today could be penciled in at guard right now. Or perhaps he could be in the mix at tackle. Or the Steelers could value his versatility as swing tackle third tight end for the team’s “Jumbo Package” assuming Mike McCarthy continues to use that.

Either way he gives the team options, but the decision McCarthy and his staff must make is whether Spencer can be a long-term starter at guard.

Behind Anderson and Fraizer, the Steelers have Brock Hoffman and Ryan McCollum, two interior lineman who can play both guard and center. The Steelers list Steven Jones, Sataoa Laumea, and Aiden Williams listed as guards. They also have Doug Nester and Lorenzo Thompson listed as offensive lineman.

Steelers 2026 Draft Needs at Center and Guard

If the Steelers situation at interior offensive line is complicate, center is simple. With Zach Frazier on board center is one of the areas where the Steelers can afford to pass on a blue-chip prospect in favor of drafting a different player at an area of need. So Steelers draft needs at center are borderline Negligible.

The Pittsburgh Steelers draft needs scale

Guard is a different story on its own, and the plot takes an even bigger twist when you consider the situation at offensive tackle.

Spencer Anderson is a capable player, but if the next Alan Faneca or even the next David DeCastro falls to the Steelers they can’t afford to let him walk. With that said, Pittsburgh does have more depth at guard than they do at tackle, so the Steelers need at guard going into the 2026 NFL Draft should be considered Moderate.

Fortifying the Interior: Steelers Sign Brock Hoffman, Re-Sign Ryan McCollum

The Pittsburgh Steelers started free agency with a bang, remained quiet for several days, and then re-entered the market to strengthen their interior offensive line. First they re-signed back-up center Ryan McCollum, and then signed free agent center/guard Brock Hoffman from the Dallas Cowboys.

  • In doing so, Omar Khan is taking steps to shore up depth at both center and guard.

Ryan McCollum arrived in Pittsburgh in the 2022 season after playing with the Lions in 2021. McCollum spent the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons on the Steelers practice squad before making the final roster in 2024.

In 2024 and started 2 games for injured Zach Frazier and appeared in all 17 games in 2025 but did not start another game in 2025. McCollum had been a restricted free agent, but Omar Kahn opted not to make him a qualifying tender.

McCollum would have been free to sign with any NFL team, but has decided to remain in Pittsburgh.

Similarly, Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer could have kept Hoffman in Dallas as he was also a restricted free agent. However, the duo opted not to tender their “dual threat” interior offensive lineman, making him free to sign with any NFL team.

News that the Steelers might be signing off Hoffman began as soon as Dallas made him a free agent. Yet the days passed and no signing without the announcement of a signing.

Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly announced the signing last week, but no official report confirmed it. Indeed, the Steelers still haven’t announced the Hoffman signing, however his agent posted a picture of him signing his contract.

Brock Hoffman brings 16 games of starting experience to the Pittsburgh Steelers, having made starts at center as well as both right and left guard.

Hoffman’s signing is similar to one the Steelers made when they brought Nate Herbig to Pittsburgh in 2023, who 17 starts to his name, and was thought of as someone who could play either center or guard, although Nate Herbig had limited experience at center.

With Isaac Seumalo’s departure in free agency, guard was arguably the Steelers weakest position, with Spencer Anderson becoming the nominal starter with scant little behind him. Neither Hoffman nor McCollum looks to push for a starting role, but both provide valuable depth.
