No More Keeping Up with The Joneses: Steelers Trade Broderick Jones to Dallas Cowboys

The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded Broderick Jones to the Dallas Cowboys, making their first critical roster decision with the NFL’s final 53 man roster cut down deadline looms.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the  Steelers are sending Jones along with their 2027 4th round pick to Dallas, and getting the Cowboys’ 2027 3rd and 6th round picks.

Broderick Jones was the first, first-round draft pick of the Omar Khan Andy Weidl era, whom Khan traded up for in the 2023 NFL Draft. When the Steelers drafted Jones, the decision was almost universally praised.

Writing in Steel City Insider, analyst Matt C. Steel lauded the class of 2023 as a “near-perfect draft.” He praised Jones for his “athleticism and physicality [that] are unique.” Steel further explained his enthusiasm for Jones:

Jones might struggle with pass protection early; however, with his strength and movement skills Jones’ impact on the run game should be significant. Couple that with the knowledge that [Christian] Gonzalez’s interviews were said to be uninspiring, moving up to get Jones was the best choice the Steelers could have made with their draft position.

Talk about a draft analyst being prophetic. The Steelers drafted Jones on measurables rather than experience, as Jones had not been a long-term starter in college and was seen as somewhat of a project.

While the Steelers didn’t start Jones on opening day 2023, he did crack the starting lineup in the middle of the season against Tennessee after Chukwuma Okorafor got benched. And with that move the Steelers running game finally began getting some traction.

  • However, Jones’ “sophomore” year was shaky at best.

As Steel predicted, he struggled in pass blocking and the Steelers running game got a slow start – although that was a trademark of Pat Meyer’s offensive lines. Left tackle had always been seen as Jones’ natural position and he played on the right during the Steelers 2024 season, in large part because Dan Moore could not make the switch from left tackle to right tackle.

The hope was that by shifting Jones would begin to fully realize his potential during the Steelers 2025 season. Nonetheless, outside of Pittsburgh Jim Wexell reported from the 2025 NFL scouting combine that Jones was perceived as a “coach killer.”

  • The reality is that results were mixed.

While Broderick Jones might not have been an early-season outright liability at left tackle, the Steelers pass protection left a lot to be desired.

Arthur Smith needed to tailor play calling sequences to ensure Aaron Rodgers got rid of the ball quickly. Smith also generously used his “Jumbo Package” bringing in reserve offensive lineman Spencer Anderson as a tight end.

Still, while no one would confuse him with a modern-day John Jackson or Marvel Smith, Jones did seem to improve as the season wore on. Unfortunately, he suffered a neck stinger in the Steelers loss to Chicago, ending his season.

  • Word was the Steelers would have issued Jones a 5th year tender had it not been for his neck injury.

Not only did they not do that, but they used their first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on offensive tackle Max Iheanachor. With 2024’s first round pick Troy Fautanu already on the team, Jones’ days with the Steelers appeared to be limited.

  • The expectation was that he would begin training camp and the season on the PUP list.

Surprisingly, Jones was active through training camp, and got extensive work in all three of the Steelers 2026 preseason contests.

And that sealed his fate with the team, as Jones struggled in pass protection in all three contests, most notably getting beaten badly in the 4th quarter in the shutout loss to the Jets.

Although the Steelers deemed Jones physically fit to participate and play in camp, he was visibly smaller following his injury. So, there’s certainly a chance that his recovery can continue and that he can salvage something of his career.

But he won’t be doing it in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform, and Omar Khan has likely recouped more value with this trade than he could have hoped to get as a compensatory pick had he kept Jones in the Steel City.

Khan Continues to Embrace the “Fail Fast” Principle

Dispatching Jones to Dallas marks the second time that Omar Khan has dealt away a first-round draft pick who is playing on a rookie contract. The first time came when he sent Kenny Pickett down the Turnpike in 2024.

  • Clearly, Khan is not averse to embracing the “Fail Fast” principle.

Although Jones clearly qualifies as a disappointment, the Steelers 2023 Draft Class is shaping up to be a strong group. Nick Herbig, Darnell Washington and Keeanu Benton have already signed second contracts with Joey Porter Jr., hopefully, soon to get his. Spencer Anderson will also begin the year as a starter.

Fortifying the Interior: Steelers Sign Brock Hoffman, Re-Sign Ryan McCollum

The Pittsburgh Steelers started free agency with a bang, remained quiet for several days, and then re-entered the market to strengthen their interior offensive line. First they re-signed back-up center Ryan McCollum, and then signed free agent center/guard Brock Hoffman from the Dallas Cowboys.

  • In doing so, Omar Khan is taking steps to shore up depth at both center and guard.

Ryan McCollum arrived in Pittsburgh in the 2022 season after playing with the Lions in 2021. McCollum spent the entire 2022 and 2023 seasons on the Steelers practice squad before making the final roster in 2024.

Russell Wilson stands in the shotgun behind Ryan McCollum in Steelers 2024 game vs the Jets.

In 2024 and started 2 games for injured Zach Frazier and appeared in all 17 games in 2025 but did not start another game in 2025. McCollum had been a restricted free agent, but Omar Kahn opted not to make him a qualifying tender.

McCollum would have been free to sign with any NFL team, but has decided to remain in Pittsburgh.

Similarly, Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer could have kept Hoffman in Dallas as he was also a restricted free agent. However, the duo opted not to tender their “dual threat” interior offensive lineman, making him free to sign with any NFL team.

News that the Steelers might be signing off Hoffman began as soon as Dallas made him a free agent. Yet the days passed and no signing without the announcement of a signing.

Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly announced the signing last week, but no official report confirmed it. Indeed, the Steelers still haven’t announced the Hoffman signing, however his agent posted a picture of him signing his contract.

Brock Hoffman brings 16 games of starting experience to the Pittsburgh Steelers, having made starts at center as well as both right and left guard.

Hoffman’s signing is similar to one the Steelers made when they brought Nate Herbig to Pittsburgh in 2023, who 17 starts to his name, and was thought of as someone who could play either center or guard, although Nate Herbig had limited experience at center.

With Isaac Seumalo’s departure in free agency, guard was arguably the Steelers weakest position, with Spencer Anderson becoming the nominal starter with scant little behind him. Neither Hoffman nor McCollum looks to push for a starting role, but both provide valuable depth.

Steelers 2025 Draft Needs @ Offensive Line – Higher Than You Think….

The first big ticket free agent signing by Omar Khan and Andy Weidl was Isaac Seumalo. A few weeks later they made Broderick Jones their first round draft pick. A year later, they drafted Troy Fautanu in the first round, Zach Frazier in the 2nd round and Mason McCormick in the 4th round.

  • Sense a trend here?

But does that mean the Steelers could look again to the offensive line in 2025? Or might that just be too much of a good thing?

Steelers Offensive Line Depth Cart: The Starters

As the intro suggested, the Steelers brain trust has been very deliberate in building their offensive line. Alas, even though the Steelers have gotten what they’ve wanted in free agency and the draft, they yet to secure what they’ve needed.

The Steelers drafted Jones as a project, and played to bring him along and hopefully work him in at left tackle during 2023. Yet Chuks Okorafor struggled, and Jones had to replace him as a starter.

Last summer, the idea was for Jones to beat out Dan Moore at left tackle during training camp, for Fautanu to start at right tackle with Moore playing the swing tackle. But…

  • Moore showed he couldn’t play right tackle
  • Jones really wasn’t beating him out at left tackle anyway
  • Fautanu kept getting hurt, first in camp, and then after his only start

In a similar vein, the Steelers arrived at St. Vincents hoping to give Fraizer and McCormick apprenticeships at center and guard. Nick Herbig got injured early in camp, forcing Frazier into that role. And James Daniels was lost early in the season forcing McCorrmick into the starting role.

On paper, the Steelers should field a pretty strong offensive line in 2025…

…But as we’ve just seen, things haven’t been going according to plan.

Steelers Offensive Line Depth Chart: The Backups

In 2024, the Steelers successfully weathered so many offensive line injuries because they had good depth here. But now James Daniels, Dan Moore and Nick Herbig are playing elsewhere.

The Steelers do have Ryan McCollum who played well in two starts last season. Spencer Anderson has position flexibility and has played 25 NFL games including 4 starts at guard last season. The team also has offensive tackle Calvin Anderson whom they late in 2024 and Dylan Cook who spent 2023 on the Steelers active roster, who spent time on IR in 2024 as well as the practice squad.

For the record, the Steelers also list Doug Nester, Lecitus Smith and Steven Jones as guards on their off season roster.

The Steelers 2025 Draft Needs @ Offensive Line

This is where things get interesting. ON paper the Steelers starting offensive line appears set. Yet, when asked to commit to his front five at the NFL owners meeting, Mike Tomlin declined, explaining:Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL Draft, Pittsburgh Steelers Draft Needs Scale

I feel like we have some guys that are certainly capable of the role. But to say that as I sit here today, would be untrue. I don’t know who I’m going to end up with or who I’m going to be in position to consider.

It would be easy to write this off as just coach speak, but at the NFL Scouting Combine Steel City Insider’s Jim Wexell talked to “a league scout who knows the Steelers well” who cited Jones’ lack of development in 2024 labeling him a “coach killer.”

Given those comments, along with the absence of a true swing tackle and lack of depth at guard, and the Steelers needs at offensive line going into the 2025 NFL Draft must be considered High.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 Free Agent Tracker

Free Agency started on Monday March 10th at noon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered free agency with as much as much to lose as they do have to gain.

The Steelers have 17 players set to become free agents. Omar Khan has over 60 million dollars in salary cap money to spend, with the ability to increase that quickly and easily with restructures and extensions. Yet, the team has been cautious.

  • If anyone is panicking over the Steelers lack of a quarterback, they’re not on the South Side.

Beyond that, the Steelers have seen far more free agents depart for greener patures than they have extended the welcome mat to.

steelers press conference,

Is Omar Khan stockpiling compensatory picks? That may not be his intent, but thus far that’s the end-product of his approach to free agency as the legal tampering period comes to an end.

5 Keys to the Steelers Success in the 2nd Half of the 2024 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers exit the bye week with a 6-2 record and embark upon a brutal 9-game stretch that includes all 6 of their AFC North games including one Thursday night game and another Wednesday night game.

These games will put the Steelers through a crucible, testing them as they haven’t been tested before.

  • Steelers won’t win all of those games.

How well they pass this test will determine whether this team not only reaches the playoffs but whether they arrive there with a chance to make a run at Lombardi Number 7. (Please spare me the “win a playoff game mantra.”)

Here are X keys to for the Steelers success in the 2nd half of the season. Quick note: things like “Keep T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward healthy” are not “keys” as those are out of Mike Tomlin’s control.

Russell Wilson, Russell Wilson first start Steelers, Steelers vs Jets

1. Lean In to Arthur Smith’s Offense

For the first six games, Arthur Smith’s offense didn’t look much different than Matt Canada’s. Yes, Smith’s differences in philosophy were evident, but offense’s biggest weapons were Chris Boswell’s leg and Justin Fields legs.

When Russell Wilson took the helm against the Jets, a different offense began to emerge.

Wilson’s “Moon Balls” to George Pickens, Calvin Austin and Pat Freiermuth did more than just create “chunk” plays for the Steelers offense, it opened up rushing lanes for Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

This must continue. The Steelers are going to need a dynamic offense to prevail in the AFC North.

2. Improve in the Red Zone

One thing that the Steelers offense hasn’t done appreciably better with Wilson at the help is score in the Red Zone. They did a little better in his first start against the Jets, but settled for field goals twice against the Giants, which transformed what should have been a blow out into a close game.

3. Beef Up the Run Defense

This need goes hand-in-hand with the offensive needs. If the Steelers execute Smith’s offense effectively, they’ll control the clock. But controlling the clock doesn’t really work if you settle for field goals instead of touchdowns.

One of the reasons that the Steelers can’t afford to keep settling for field goals is that it allows other teams to run the ball.

  • And the Steelers have struggled to stop the run – at times.

When the Chargers came into Acrisure, all eyes were on J.K. Dobbins and one of the NFL’s most vaunted rushing attacks. Yet the Steelers shut them down. Yet…

This is priority A 1 for Teryl Austin. Whether it means using the nickel defense less, playing Elandon Roberts more, coaching Patrick Queen to cover his gaps better or snapping Keeanu Benton out of a sophomore slump, he has to figure it out.

4. Continue to Build Cohesion on the Offensive Line

Once again the Steelers offensive line started slowly, but this time we know why: Injuries.

Everyone one of the training camp projected starters not named Dan Moorehas missed time, with Nate Herbig, James Daniels and Troy Fautanu lost for the season.

Given that the line has held its own, but it will need to do more than that on the back-end of the season. One player who clearly must step up is Broderick Jones. A year ago Jones earned his first start at left tackle against the Titans and that sparked the beginning of the turn around for the offensive line.

In 2024 he’s struggled at times. There is no doubt that injuries hampered him in the summer and early part of the year, but injuries or naught, the Steelers need better play from Jones during these last nine games.

5. Find a Way to Unleash Minkah Magic

Minkah Fitzpatrick has had a quiet season. That doesn’t mean he has played poorly. In fact, he’s done a good job of manning the back door and keeping a lid on the opposing offenses.

But to neutralize the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson and the Steelers are going to need him to be a playmaker again.

What to Make of the Steelers “Maginot” Offensive Line?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to kickoff their celebration of the 1974 Super Bowl IX championship team at half time when the New York Jets come to Acrisure Stadium for Sunday Night football.

  • As Tony Dungy noted on Instagram, there’s a historical parallel emerging in real time.

In week 7 of the 1974 season Chuck Noll benched Joe Gilliam who was 4-1-1 in favor of the veteran Terry Bradshaw. And here in week 7 in 2024, all indicators point to Mike Tomlin benching Justin Fields, who is 4-2 as a starter, in favor of veteran Russell Wilson.

That’s a great story and an awesome piece of historical symmetry that – God willing – will sustain itself through February.

But a tweet from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac has me reaching further back into history for another parallel.

Will we remember 2024 as the year the Maginot Line reached Pittsburgh?

The Maginot Line in 88 Words

World War I was fought in muddy trenches in Northern and Eastern France. Determined to avoid a repeat, France spent 3.9 billion dollars building the Maginot Line along the German border.

The Maginot Line featured the best weapons and best fortification that money could buy, including air conditioning and its own subway.

But for all its bells and whistles, the Maginot Line was a complete failure. When Germany attacked in 1940 it went around, over or otherwise ignored France’s border defenses, securing victory in a few short weeks.

The Backstory Behind the Steelers 2024 Offensive Line

For a good chunk of the teens the Steelers had the best offensive line in the business. Then a combination of age, injury and Salary Cap Armageddon forced them to rebuild overnight.

Between the playoff loss against Cleveland in 2020 and opening day 2021 the Steelers fielded 4 new starters on offensive line. But rebuilding on the fly on the cheap didn’t work. Dan Moore is the only starter from that 2021 opening-day offensive line that remains.

Since then, Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan have invested heavily in the offensive line. And they’re playing the long game in both free agency and the draft

James Daniels, 2022 free agent signing
Nate Herbig, 2023 free agent signing
Isaac Seumalo, 2023 free agent signing

Broderick Jones, First round draft pick 2023 NFL Draft
Troy Fautanu, First round draft pick 2024 NFL Draft
Zach Fraizer, 2nd round draft pick, 2024 NFL Draft
Mason McCormick, 4th round draft pick 2024 NFL Draft

The plan was for the line was to be rock that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith built is Bill Cowheresque offensive around.

But the Steelers will take the field against the Jets with Daniels, Herbig, Fautanu on injured reserve, Frazier out with an injury, Broderick Jones playing with an injured elbow, Seumalo starting just his third game due to injury and McCormick starting for Daniels.

So yes it does feel like Khan and company have built the football equivalent of the Maginot line in Pittsburgh. But that feeling is where the analogy should end.

The Maginot Line is a textbook example of a country preparing for the last war instead of the next one. In contrast, investing in the offensive line is always a sound strategy in football, at any level.

The Steelers have just has an incredibly bad streak of luck in terms of injuries on the offensive line.

  • But that hardly dooms the Terry Bradshaw-Russell Wilson parallel.

The last time the Steelers had to rebuild their offensive line in season was 2008.  It did not go smoothly, but it did end with Ben Roethlisberger holding the Lombardi on the dais after Super Bowl XLIII asking, “Offensive line, who’s laughing now?”

Wheeling and Dealing Not Done? Steelers Release Initial 2023 Roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced their initial 53-man roster today as Omar Khan continued to wheel and deal.

Over the weekend Khan dealt Kevin Dotson to the Los Angeles Rams, getting a fourth round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, swapping 5th round picks and sending a 6th round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to LA. But Kahn has already traded back into the 6th round when he dealt Kendrick Green to the Houston Texans for their 6th round pick in 2025.

The Steelers cuts included some surprises. Veterans Zach Gentry and Tre Norwood got visits from The Turk, as did free agent signees Breiden Fehoko and Nick Kwiatkoski who played nose tackle an inside linebacker respectively. Quincy Roche’s second go around with the Steelers will also come to an end.

Here’s a look at who made the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 initial roster. There is at least one more move to come as you’ll see at the bottom.

Flipping the Script: Steelers Trade of Kevin Dotson to Rams Reverses Recent Trends

The composition of the Steelers roster remains unknown as Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan have the lion’s share of their cuts to make before today’s 4:00 pm deadline.

  • But we already know one fundamental fact: The duo is flipping the script on Steelers late summer trading narrative.

News broke during the weekend that the Steelers had dealt Kevin Dotson, their 4th round pick from the 2020 NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams. In exchange the Steelers get the Rams’ 4th round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The teams will exchange 5th rounds picks in the 2025 NFL Draft and the Steelers will send Los Angeles their 6th round pick in 2025.

Kevin Dotson, Steelers vs Broncos

Time will tell which side gets the better of this deal, but the move reverses the Steelers recent tendency to trade away picks to bolster depth. To be fair to Kevin Colbert, these trades typically involved a lot of back and forth, with the Steelers dealing and often times getting back 5th and 6th round picks.

But taken as a whole, the Steelers eroded their draft capital by trading to bring the Malik Reed, Joe Schobert, Avery Williames of the NFL to Pittsburgh.

By adding an extra 4th round pick Omar Khan is beginning to change that.

Snapshot of Kevin Dotson’s Steelers Career

Although he was only a 4th round pick, Dotson arrived in Pittsburgh and was penciled in as a future starter. Dotson started 4 games as a rookie, and when the team opted to let Matt Feiler walk, Dotson earned the starting spot.

In 2021 Dotson started the first 9 games at left guard during a season when the Steelers had one of their worst offensive lines in recent memory. Yet, in this scribe’s humble opinion they were reaching the outskirts respectability by midseason, only to see that journey come to a crashing halt when they lost Dotson in the tie against Detroit.

Dotson rebounded in 2022 and started all 17 games, but was reportedly fighting nagging injuries throughout the year.

Early in the 2023 off season the Steelers brass showed signs of being read to move on. First they signed guard Nate Herbig in free agency. But Herbig’s contract tagged him as a backup. This was not the case for Isaac Seumalo who got clear starter’s money.

As the Steelers learned all too painfully early during Mike Tomlin’s tenure, you can never have enough good offensive lineman. But the emergence of Spencer Anderson and the number of snaps Kendrick Green got against the Falcons at guard put the writing on the wall for Kevin Dotson.

Getting a 4th round pick for a backup guard playing on the final year of his rookie contract is an excellent deal in today’s NFL.

What’s Going On? Steelers Sign of Armon Watts, Cut Jamir Jones Raising Questions about Depth

Most of the Steelers moves in free agency under Omar Khan thus far have been pretty easy to understand thus far. But this week has brought some head-scratchers.

Jamir Jones,

Jamir Jones in 2021. Photo Credit: USA Today via the Rams Wire.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the Steelers signed free agent defensive tackle Armon Watts. A few days later the Steelers announced that they had cut outside linebacker Jamir Jones, just a few weeks after extending an restricted free agent offer.

The Watts’ signing is a bit of a surprise, given that the Steelers have already signed Breiden Fehoko who is also a fellow defensive tackle. As Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, points out, this double dip on the part of the Steelers is understandable given that they’re basically replacing Chris Wormley and Tyson Alualu two free agents who won’t be back.

  • What’s more puzzling is the decision to cut Jamir Jones.

Jamir Jones was the only experienced outside linebacker behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. And if it’s true the Jones coming in to spell Watt and/or Highsmith for an extended period would have left opposing offensive coordinators licking their chops, he did play nearly 60% of special teams snaps.

  • Are the Steelers signaling that another free agent signing at outside linebacker is imminent?

Perhaps Pittsburgh’s about to come to terms with Bud Dupree? Time will tell.

Thus far Omar Khan has basically followed the path Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin blazed in free agency of shoring up depth in key areas to avoid a situation where they need to reach to fill a need.

He’s done this at cornerback by bringing in Patrick Peterson, at inside linebacker by signing Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts and at guard (and center) by signing Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig.

  • Moreover, these signings have come positions which can be cost-effectively addressed in free agency.

Still, it is a little peculiar that Omar Khan would sign two guards and two interior defensive lineman while leaving the cupboard bear behind the Steelers starters at outside linebacker and offensive tackle – even if those positions expensive to fill via free agency.

With that said, with experience playing for the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, Armon Watts has experience in 57 games, has made 22 starts in which he’s logged 8 sacks and forced 3 fumbles. Assuming he’s arriving in Pittsburgh at or near the veteran minimum he could be a good value signing.

Steelers 2023 Draft Needs @ Center & Guard – Is Pittsburgh Set?

Let’s face it. Offensive line isn’t “Sexy.” An offense might need to field five lineman, but the other six men are said to play “The skill positions.” Even then, interior offensive lineman get short shrift.

Quibble you do?

Take a look at how NFL teams prioritize Center and Guard in the draft and in how they spend their salary cap. Heck, offensive tackles get Hollywood movies made about them. Try making On the Blind Side about a guard.

True as that may be, the Pittsburgh Steelers have more interior offensive lineman in the Hall of Fame, see Mike Webster, Dermontti Dawson and Alan Faneca, than they do wide receivers (Lynn Swann and John Stallworth).

During the last two springs both Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan have invested heavily in interior offensive line positions. Does that mean the Steelers can ignore them in the draft? Let’s take a look.

Mitch Trubisky, James Daniel, Mason Cole, Steelers 2022 Offensive Line

Steelers Depth Cart at Center and Guard: The Starters

The leader of the Steelers offensive line is unquestionably James Daniels. Kevin Colbert signed him last spring to a 3 year 26 million dollar contract, after Daniels had finished four years as a starter in Chicago.

James Daniels not only leads the team in terms of talent and salary, but also in terms of attitude. When the Buffalo Bills hit Kenny Pickett late, Daniels wasted no time in defending his quarterback – just what you need to see from your top offensive lineman.

Last year Colbert also signed Mason Cole to play center, after Cole had played for 3 years in Arizona and 1 Minnesota. Cole helped shore up a position that had been a weakness was solid all season.
Here’s where it gets interesting.

Officially speaking, Kevin Dotson is the Steelers other starting guard. Kevin Dotson was the Steelers 4th round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and while he missed games in both 2019 and 2020, the Steelers line was certainly stronger with him playing. Dotson fortunately played all 17 games in 2022.

But that didn’t stop Omar Khan and Andy Wedil from going out and signing Isaac Seumalo, who brings 7 years of NFL experience with the Philadelphia Eagles totaling 81 games and 60 starts, including 17 last season. The money the Steelers are paying Seumalo makes it clear that they’re not bringing him to Pittsburgh to be a backup.

Steelers Guard and Center Depth Chart: The Backups

When talking about depth at guard and center it would remise not to point out that both James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo have some experience at center. As does Nate Herbig, whom the Steelers signed as a free agent from the New York Jets (although he is another ex-Philadelphia Eagle.)

Steelers Draft, Steelers Draft Needs scale

The Steelers also have Kendrick Green, their 2022 3rd round pick who was their starting center for most of 2022. Green also has position flexibility at guard, and many feel he’s more naturally suited there.

The Steelers 2023 Draft Needs @ Center and Guard

“You can never have enough good offensive lineman” the old adage goes. And that’s a sound philosophy. But the Steelers have three if not four starter-capable guards, a former 3rd round pick, and an established starter at Center.

And oh, by the way, 3 of those guards have experience playing center. And the Steelers only have 7 picks this year. Therefore, their need at both center and guard going into the 2023 draft should be considered as Negligible.
